Key events in the history of the Centre.

2024

  • For the first time in the history of Polish computer science, four supercomputers from one Polish computing centre (Helios GPU, Athena, Helios CPU and Ares) are ranked on the TOP500 list.
  • Helios GPU (89,760 cores, 30.44 PFlops) for the first time on the TOP500 list and ranks 55th place (the June edition).
  • Athena (6,144 cores, 7.7 PFlops) for the fifth time on the TOP500 list and ranks 177th place (the June edition).
  • Helios CPU (75,264 cores, 3.35 PFlops) for the second time on the TOP500 list and ranks 305th place (the June edition).
  • Ares (37,824 cores, 4 PFlops) for the seventh time on the TOP500 list and ranks 442nd place (the June edition).
  • Helios GPU ranks 3rd place on the Green500 list (the June edition).
  • Cyfronet has made available the computing resources of the two currently fastest supercomputers in Poland – Helios and Athena – to create Bielik, a Polish language model.
  • Meetween, EOSC Beyond, EPICURE, FFplus, PLGrid ICON and EPOS ON projects launched.

2023

  • Cyfronet AGH honored with the Polonia Minor Award.
  • Helios CPU (during installation) for the first time on the TOP500 list and ranks 290th place (the November edition).
  • Ares (37,824 cores, 4 PFlops) for the fifth and sixth time on the TOP500 list and ranks 362nd place (the June edition) and 403rd place (the November edition).
  • Athena (6,144 cores, 7.7 PFlops) for the third and fourth time on the TOP500 list and ranks 123rd place (the June edition) and 154th place (the November edition).
  • The 50th anniversary of Cyfronet.
  • DOME, EuroCC 2, EUreka3D, PIONIER-Q projects launched.

2022

  • Athena supercomputer with theoretical peak performance 7.7 PFlops is deployed in Cyfronet.
  • For the first time in the history of Polish computer science, three supercomputers from one Polish computing centre (Athena, Ares and Prometheus) are ranked on the TOP500 list.
  • Prometheus (53,748 cores, 2.65 PFlops) for the fifteenth time on the TOP500 list and ranks 475th place (the June edition).
  • Ares (37,824 cores, 4 PFlops) for the third and fourth time on the TOP500 list and ranks 290th place (the June edition) and 323rd place (the November edition).
  • Athena (6,144 cores, 7.7 PFlops) for the first and second time on the TOP500 list and ranks 105th place (the June edition) and 113th place (the November edition).
  • Inauguration of the LUMI supercomputer.
  • EUMaster4HPC, FAIRCORE4EOSC, EuroScienceGateway, InterTwin, DT-GEO and Geo-INQUIRE projects launched.

2021

  • Ares supercomputer with theoretical peak performance 4 PFlops is deployed in Cyfronet.
  • Prometheus (53,748 cores, 2.65 PFlops) for the thirteenth and fourteenth time on the TOP500 list and ranks 373rd place (the June edition) and 440th place (the November edition).
  • Ares (37,824 cores, 4 PFlops) for the first and second time on the TOP500 list and ranks 216th place (the June edition) and 267th place (the November edition).
  • A new version of the ACC Cyfronet AGH website has been launched.
  • EuroHPC PL, PIONIER-LAB, KMD3, EGI ACE and EOSC Future projects launched.

2020

  • Among the strategic infrastructures included in January 2020 on the Polish Research Infrastructure Map there are two projects proposed by ACC Cyfronet AGH as the initiator and coordinator of the PLGrid consortium:
    • Supercomputing Infrastructure for EuroHPC,
    • National Cloud Infrastructure PLGrid for EOSC.
  • Prometheus (53,748 cores, 2.65 PFlops) eleventh and twelfth time on the TOP500 list and ranks 288th place (the June edition) and 324th place (the November edition).
  • The Prometheus supercomputer supports scientists in the fight against coronavirus COVID-19.
  • EPOS PL +, EPOS SP, PROTEUS-RS and EUROCC projects launched.

2019

  • Cyfronet represents Poland in the LUMI consortium, composed of eight countries that will jointly build one of the fastest European supercomputers.
  • Prometheus supercomputer (53 604 cores, 2.4 PFlops) ninth and tenth time on the TOP500 list and ranks 174th place (the June edition) and 241st place (the November edition).
  • Cyfronet exhibition stand at the ISC'19 conference.
  • Cyfronet provides a new computational system for research using AI methods, with computational power over 4 PFlops for tensor operations and 256 TFlops for standard calculations.
  • PRACE-LAB, PRACE-6IP, SANO, EOSC-Synergy and EOSC Enhance projects launched.

2018

  • Prometheus supercomputer (53 604 cores, 2.4 PFlops) seventh and eight time on the TOP500 list and ranks high, 103rd place in the June edition and then 131st place in the November edition.
  • EOSC-Hub and PRIMAGE projects have been launched.

2017

  • Further dynamic development, including establishment of 6 new laboratories.
  • Prometheus supercomputer ranks 71st (the June edition) and 77th place (the November edition) on the TOP500 list.
  • Sat4Envi, Gliomed, EPOS-PL and eXtreme DataCloud projects launched.

2016

  • Prometheus ranks 48th (the June edition) and 59th place (the November edition) on the TOP500 list.

2015

  • The new backup Data Center is completed.
  • Prometheus supercomputer is deployed at CYFRONET and appears on the TOP500 list for the first time, ranking 49th place in the June edition and then 38th place (the November edition).
  • Zeus supercomputer eleventh and twelfth time among the fastest computers on the TOP500 list and ranks 269th place (the June edition) and then 386th place (the November edition.
  • For the first time in history two supercomputers from CYFRONET (Prometheus and Zeus) are ranked on TOP500 list, in one edition.
  • CYFRONET starts active participation in INDIGO-DataCloud, EGI-Engage, EPOS-IP and PRACE 4IP projects.

2014

2013

  • Zeus supercomputer seventh and eight time on the TOP500 and ranks 113rd place (the June edition) and then 145th place (the November edition).
  • After upgrading of Zeus supercomputer configuration to 25 468 cores, the theoretical peak performance reached 374 TFlops.
  • The start of construction of a new computer hall of the ACK CYFRONET AGH.
  • Anniversary Medal has been minted.

2012

2011

  • ACK Cyfronet AGH invests in development of Metropolitan Area Network infrastructure. For the purposes of MAN, the 26 km long pipeline – connecting the center with boundaries of Krakow – is available.
  • Acquiring new fiber optic connections, allowing for the creation of alternative communication paths to the national backbone. Krakow MAN is connected to the academic computer network PIONIER towards Katowice, Bielsko-Biala, Warsaw and Rzeszow (four directions of backbone) through the links with the capacity of 2 x 10 Gbps.
  • Zeus supercomputer has been placed on 80th position on the TOP500 list.
  • The configuration of the Zeus supercomputer (HP Cluster Platform 3000 BL) is extended to 12032 cores (Intel Xeon processors).
  • CYFRONET's Zeus supercomputer has been placed on 81st position on the TOP500 list.
  • Total amount of installed disk space exceeds 2PB.
  • Deployment of Hitachi Data Systems High Performance NAS Platform for computing infrastructure.

2010

  • CYFRONET's representative was elected to the prestigious group of seven-person EGI (European Grid Initiative) Executive Board.
  • Zeus supercomputer has been placed on 161st position on the TOP 500 LIST.
  • The configuration of Zeus supercomputer (HP Cluster Platform 3000 BL) was extended to 9544 cores (Intel Xeon processors).

2009

2008

  • The configuration of SGI ALTIX 3700 supercomputer is extended to 1,5 TFlops.
  • Operation of the Krakow MAN in the 10 Gbps Ethernet technology began.
  • Zeus supercomputer (HP Cluster Platform 3000 BL) with 2048 cores is deployed at CYFRONET.

2007

  • An SGI ALTIX 4700 computer with SGi RASC acceleration module is deployed at CYFRONET.
  • Two IBM BladeCenter HS21 servers are deployed at CYFRONET (6.2 TFlops).
  • An HP Storage Works EVA 8100 disk array is deployed at CYFRONET.
  • An agreement concerning the creation of the Polish Grid (PL-Grid) Consortium was signed. Consortium's activities aim at creation of a fully functional grid computing infrastructure that can be used by the academic community. The infrastructure includes not only the high performance computing resources, but also the necessary storage or dedicated tools, which enable to design and execute scientific applications in distributed computing resources.

2006

  • An SGI ALTIX 3700 (Baribal) supercomputer with 0.8 TFlops of theoretical peak performance is deployed at CYFRONET.
  • An HP Storage Works EVA 8000 disk array is deployed at CYFRONET.

2005

  • An HP Storage Works XP12000 disk array is deployed at CYFRONET.

2004

  • ACK CYFRONET AGH initiates active participation in European research projects of the 6th Framework Programme.

2003

  • An HP Integrity SuperDome computer is deployed at CYFRONET (the first such computer in Poland).

2002

  • A RackSaver PC cluster is deployed at CYFRONET as part of the CROSSGRID project.
  • AGH CYFRONET AGH, a coordinator, began the implementation of the CROSSGRID project.

2001

  • CYFRONET initiates active participation in European research projects of the 5th Framework Programme.

1998

  • An SGI Origin2000 computer is deployed at CYFRONET.

1997

  • The ATM communications subnet is deployed within the Krakow MAN.
  • CYFRONET joins the POL-34 national backbone.

1996

  • An Exemplar SPP1600/XA computer, deployed at CYFRONET, took position on
    the TOP500 list.
  • The first automatic tape library (ATL 2640) is installed at CYFRONET.

1994

  • A 2 Mb/s link is deployed between Krakow and Warsaw.

1991

  • CYFRONET installs a Convex 120 machine – the first vector computer in Central and Eastern Europe.
  • The first Polish national Internet link is established between Krakow and Warsaw.
  • The Krakow MAN construction begins.

1990

  • The first Krakow node of the EARN/BITNET network is deployed at CYFRONET (on an IBM 4381 computer).

1975

  • A CDC CYBER 72 computer is deployed at CYFRONET.

1973

  • CYFRONET is established.
