Europe is taking another step towards next-generation quantum computers. LUMI-IQ is being built in Finland – a system that will combine quantum computing with the power of supercomputing and artificial intelligence. Poland is also participating in the project, represented by ACC Cyfronet AGH.
Why is this important? Quantum computers have enormous potential, but their biggest challenge today is errors. Qubits – the basic units of quantum computing – are extremely sensitive to interference. Therefore, the future of this technology depends on creating so-called logical qubits, which, thanks to error correction, can be much more reliable.
LUMI-IQ aims to help develop this technology in practice. It will be the first European superconducting quantum computer designed from the ground up to work with logical qubits and error correction. This is a significant step towards quantum machines capable of performing calculations inaccessible to today's computers.
In the future, the platform could find applications in drug and new material design, chemistry, energy sector, and complex optimization problems. And for Europe, it is more than just a research project: it is building its own competencies and infrastructure in one of the key technologies of the future.
