ACC Cyfronet AGH is the largest computing center in Poland and the operator of the PLGrid infrastructure. The center provides advanced supercomputing resources, artificial intelligence solutions, data processing, and quantum technologies for the scientific community, public administration, and enterprises. Among the systems developed by Cyfronet is the Helios supercomputer, one of the most energy-efficient HPC systems in Europe.
The latest report by the National Institute of Telecommunications, entitled “Analysis of the Potential of AI Development Centers in Poland,” highlights several important findings. One of its key conclusions is that the development of artificial intelligence in Poland will not be driven by a single dominant hub, but rather by the collaboration of multiple specialized centers of expertise. We are pleased that Kraków and ACC Cyfronet AGH have been identified as one of the key pillars of this ecosystem.
Today, the strength of AI is increasingly determined not only by innovative algorithmic ideas. Equally important are access to advanced computing power, high-quality data, and the expertise needed to translate research into real-world applications. This is why investments in infrastructure such as the Helios supercomputer and the PLGrid environment are of strategic importance for the development of Polish science, business, and public administration. It is particularly significant that the report recognizes the role of sovereign computing infrastructure. Europe is becoming increasingly aware of the need to build its own technological capabilities and AI resources. For many years, Cyfronet has supported this direction by providing researchers, startups, and companies with access to state-of-the-art HPC, AI, and quantum computing resources.
It is also worth noting that Poland now has an opportunity to distinguish itself not only through the scale of its investments, but also through their efficiency. Growing demand for computing power means that the development of AI must go hand in hand with a responsible approach to energy consumption. That is why we focus on energy-efficient solutions and the advancement of so-called Green AI. It is no coincidence that Helios is recognized as one of the most energy-efficient supercomputers in the world.
The report confirms that Kraków has become one of the most important locations on the AI map of Central and Eastern Europe. For us, this is not only a source of satisfaction, but above all a motivation to continue our efforts. We want the infrastructure being developed at Cyfronet to serve as a place where new technologies are created, startups can grow, and solutions are developed to address the most pressing challenges of the modern world.
