Two key projects submitted by the Academic Computer Centre Cyfronet AGH under Measure 2.4 of the European Funds for a Modern Economy Programme 2021-2027 have been selected for funding. This is a significant achievement that will strengthen Poland’s position in advanced computing and cloud technologies.
The project “National Supercomputing Infrastructure for EuroHPC – AQUILA” will be carried out by a broad consortium of leading Polish computing centres and research institutions that have been building infrastructure for Polish science for decades. The project is coordinated by Cyfronet AGH, with the following partners:
- Wrocław Centre for Networking and Supercomputing (WCSS),
- Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PCSS),
- CI TASK Computing Centre,
- Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling, University of Warsaw (ICM UW),
- National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ),
- Institute of Theoretical and Applied Informatics of the Polish Academy of Sciences,
- Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
The funding secured for the project, amounting to more than PLN 213 million, will enable the creation of Poland’s first hybrid platform combining a quantum computer with a classical supercomputer, based on the HQCC (Hybrid Quantum-Classical Computing) model. The project will be implemented across five Polish regions: Małopolska, Greater Poland, Pomerania, Lower Silesia, and Silesia.
The second project, “National PLGrid Cloud Infrastructure for EOSC HUB”, will be implemented by a consortium of six High Performance Computing (HPC) centres. In addition to Cyfronet AGH, acting as the project leader, the consortium includes:
- Wrocław Centre for Networking and Supercomputing (WCSS),
- Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PCSS),
- CI TASK Computing Centre,
- Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling, University of Warsaw (ICM UW),
- National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ).
The project has secured funding of more than PLN 167 million, which will support the creation and deployment of a cloud infrastructure together with the necessary system and service layers.
The implementation of both projects marks a major milestone in the development of Poland’s national research infrastructure, opening up new opportunities for researchers and businesses in the fields of data processing, advanced computing, and scientific simulations.
