# The PLGrid infrastructure user with an ERC grant

Publication date: April 18, 2023

**Prof. Piotr Wcisło from the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science at the Nicolaus Copernicus University, as one of four people from Poland, was among the winners of European ERC (European Research Council) grants.**

For the implementation of the "New experimental methods for trapping cold molecular hydrogen" project, the ERC decided to allocate over 1.9 million EUR, which is one of the highest amounts of funding in the competition for the Starting Grant. The project aims to create a kind of "trap" using strong laser and electromagnetic fields, allowing the hydrogen molecule to be trapped inside a vacuum chamber. This in turn is to open a new chapter in basic research, providing a basis for testing on a previously unavailable scale not only the principles of quantum mechanics, but also quantum electrodynamics for molecules.

Prof. Wcisło is a user of the PLGrid infrastructure, which allows free use of, among others, supercomputers and data storage systems installed in Cyfronet.

We sincerely congratulate the Professor on his prestigious distinction!

We invite you to watch the presentation of the project on [the UMK website](https://portal.umk.pl/pl/article/pionierzy-nauki-z-grantami-erc).
